research week 10

BVA 303 RESEARCH kathryn - Week 10.

Update of the week

This week i had a one on one with Kathryn and talked about what I was feeling about this project especially after the last two weeks from holiday. I explained I wasn't getting anything achieved as I had a fair bit of artist block. Which did not help my situation as part of it was that I had too much on my plate doing 3 days a week at my internship, Working a part time hospitality job while studying and researching and lastly getting round to what I am wanting to paint and painting in general.

So I had two weeks off and cut it down to working on my body of work and to gain and make myself have ideas for my work. And I worked over the holiday's at my part-time job.

With painting I had to sit myself down and make myself do something to get something flowing for ideas. So I started by drawing on this wooden door that my class mate Royce found for me.

With this initial idea of this painting I couldn't think of anything so then I looked back at my drawings and wanted to experiment with the morphing and merging of the faces to create something different.

In the end I started playing around and experimenting with the paints turning it into a session of finger-painting and as I was in the zone I stopped to look back and this is what it turned out to be. I discussed and realized with Kathryn that the overall idea of this project is to have no control, to stop being so in the box and to create out of the box and expand my painting techniques and to break the rules.

So I stopped painting and had a look back at my initial body of work on this gigantic wall to get a broader perspective and to compare the painterly style to the more controlled style. Then I looked back at my drawing to compare them to the big painting and had the idea to map it all out in places were I could try and use this new technique and gain ideas for the space.

Comparison between recent painting and older initial painting on the wall.

WEEK 10

When week 10 started I ask to cut down my shifts at my internship to Once a week in the morning on Wednesday's as I have already gain 40 hours since starting. We also talked about what other inspiration I have gotten from CONTEMPORARY artist models - such as Emma Hopkins, Scott Hutchinson and Gabriel Monreno who work with the idea of portraits, identity and merging or morphing of the faces

Overall Evaluation

Strengths I thought that my exhibition piece had going for it was the positioning of the painting and the correlating of the simple plain portrait and the drawings with it next to the painting. Along with the color pallet of the red fabric wrapping around the portrait and the drawings kind of brings them together.

Weaknesses Of the exhibition piece I believe if the drawings were not there it would have not made sense to the artist statement and what I was trying to achieve and portray the idea of my work. Personally I feel what I could have done better was to add another painting of the progression of the different style to a normal portrait painting. and bring in photos of my bigger piece of works.

But the over-all feedback I had gotten was very supportive and they understood what I was visually trying to say with my exhibition. I had very good feedback with the drawing above - inspiration from artist model Scott Hutchinson - this was the idea of the merging of our three faces and the three of us combined.

As you can see I have pointed out the five hidden and seen faces that are merging or unidentified in this drawing. I wanted to experiment with them a bit.

Experimental Mis-hap -

So unintentionally I had thought I was using hair spray but accidentally used anti-per-sprint to have the effect of the pencil to not rub off. As I finally realized I wasn't using hairspray I almost freaked out but funnily enough it gave the charcoal effect and made it easier to move around the pencil while rubbing it with my finger. The outcome made it look like it was flowing and moving look and I embraced that muck up in the end.
