BVA312, Art History week 4.
Baroque part 2.
This week is a carry on with the Baroque period of high Italian art, with sister Wendy part 2.
She talks about the elongation of the parts of the human bodies in some of the artwork. Such as the stretch of the arms and legs and the different proportion sizes. Dramatizing and exaggerating the curves and roundness of the bodies in the works.
Peter Paul Rubens "Peace and war" is the description of flow and softness.
The background having the war of the gods while the mortals are in peace.
Ruben's was one of the main influences of the Baroque period giving the flow and
liveliness of the figures, as if tho they were coming alive.
His first wife was 18 and him being 32. the second wife was 16 while he was significantly much older than her. Allegory in art is when the subject of artwork or the various elements that form the composition. which is used to symbolize a deeper and moral or spiritual meaning. such as life, death and virtue creating the symbolizing themes.

Spain, France and the Netherlander's all have influential basis on the art world itself.
Holland painted still life of fruit to the light intake of the churches, to the life-like
fullness of the peasants drinking.

Johannes Vermeer always painted the silences
and stillness of his familiar figures. Sister Wendy explains that
"Life is the only actor" describing Vermeer's pictures.
King Philip the fourth had a general love of art and wanted one of Madrid's greatest
painter people have ever seen.

Las Meninas |
Las Meninas has been painted that all figures have the same amount of
respectfulness to all the faces. The involvement of the painting is set in the same
position as when you look into the painting. Giving a relationship between the
figures of the painting and the audience looking into it.
Like a constraint or a glimpse of time.
Claude Loraine mainly exploring the sunlit nature of landscapes and architecture.

Lorraine improved and focused on the naturalistic scene of the lighting and detail
of the small figures and architecture. To give a sizable scale and proportion to the
painting. Giving a romantic and soft scene to the setting of landscapes.

Tenebrism is the strong differences between light and dark especially in Caravaggio or
Chiaroscuro work creating a dramatic 3D effect and making the flatness of the figures
come alive.

What is the relationship between this painting and the Mona Lisa.
Vermeer's has left this woman as a mystery. Giving the engaging gaze and subtly asking
the audience what she is looking at and who?
