Agre asserts that networking is fundamentally about community? Yes or no?
  • I would agree with this statement as to create a social networking you must have a community to start it first. Networking is a form of communication with one another.

On what does Agre believe “…research of all kinds depends critically…”?
  • Agre states “Research of all kinds depends critically on intensive and continually evolving communication among people engaged in related projects.”

What does Agre discuss as the result of “…establishing professional relationships with particular people and involving yourself in particular professional communities…”?
  • Agre states “…Establishing professional relationships with particular people and involving yourself in particular professional communities will change you:”  Agre suggests that involving yourself creates opportunities which do change you. He also states “…not only will you internalize a variety of interesting points of view, but you will become more comfortable in your writing and speaking because you will be engaged in an ongoing conversation with people you know…” Because you are confident with the people you have communicated with, that are like minded etc…

What should you do if there is no relevant professional community according to Agre?
  • According to Agre you should find people in your own area that like the same things as you. Then to start your own community, and to expand it…
How much time does Agre suggest should be spent on establishing and growing your professional network? Do you agree? Why/Why not?
  • My guess as i cannot find the answer... is that you"ll have to spend as much time as possible to create that growing network. Along with establishing the network to everyone...
What are the basic steps of "Fundamentals of professional networking" described by Agre?
  • Know your goals (Create friendships).
  • Identify relevant people (create relevance to your profession).
  • Court these people individually.
  • Meet face to face in a professional meeting.
  • Exchange drafts.
  • Follow up.
Agre mention's that the networking process " Produces bonds of reciprocal obligation through the exchange of favors." Explain what you think he means by this? do you agree? Why/Why not?
  • I think he means that if favors have been exchange then their is an obligation to create a bond of friendship or relationship between individuals. I agree with this as it is in a way a bit like giving a gift. One is not expected to give it back but will create that bond and will gift back if gifted.
Agre says the networking process "requires you to cultivate a realistic awareness of power." Explain what you think he means by this? do you agree? Why/Why not?
  • Meaning you need to gain the knowledge and know the status of people in there's or your networks. Along with the amount of influence they have on your network it" self... Along with also knowing your own place in your networking, and knowing where you stand. To use for your advantage...
9 Agre says the networking process "Calls for a significant but manageable up-front investment" Explain what you think he means by this? do you agree? Why/Why not?
  • Meaning if someone whom you can benefit from is in your network. You then need to take the time to invest into this person. To get to know them as well, to create this favorable relationship.
10. What are the "Temptation" Agre suggest's, that should be avoided when it comes to communication via WWW? Explain why it is so important that each of these temptations can be avoided in the context of professional networking.
  • The temptation to react... not to get angry when provoked.
  • The temptation to treat people like machines... being polite when communicating with people, don't take advantage and treat them like a person.
  • The temptation to pretense
  • The temptation to paranoia... to not feel pressured to participate.
  • The temptation to get overwhelmed... to not get overwhelmed by the situation.
  • The temptation to get addicted.
  • The temptation to waste time.
11. follow up phase of the 6th step process, the email is generally used to maintain the connection you have made with professional.

12. concept of an amercing theme is a pattern that emerges that forms over the span of their career.

13.
  • (1) their own research is an instance of the patterns they are noticing (unfortunately, this is usually a prerequisite to being taken seriously in the role of pattern-seeker),

  •  (2) they care enough to actually think about other people's research (this quality is often in short supply, thus creating abundant opportunities for those who possess it),

  •  (3) they communicate intensively enough with other people to actually keep up-to-date with them (this is where e-mail helps),

  •  (4) they are smart enough to notice the patterns in the first place (this is sometimes the least important factor).  You can work wonders if you cultivate these qualities.
